The first thing to remember when buying a diamond (or jewelry in
general) is that you get what you pay for. If something seems too good to be
true, it probably is!!!
The four c’s and proper proportions are very important.
Most people are passingly familiar with the four c’s:
Cut: round, oval, pear, marquise, princess…..
Color: how much color from traces of nitrogen a diamond has.
Clarity: the amount and visibility of inclusions in a diamond.
Carat weight: it is a metric weight.
5 carats = a gram.
The most important and least understood factor in diamond
brilliance is proper proportions. An ideal cut, also known as the Tolkowsky cut,
was identified by Mr. Tolkowsky. He discovered the formula for the ideal cut in
order to maximize a stone’s brilliance. An ideal cut stone brings out the
maximum fire a diamond is capable of producing...
Most major diamonds sold in the United States have been graded
by an independent gem laboratory. Certified diamonds have become the norm when
purchasing a diamond over one half carat weight.
Certifications are still subjective and should not be considered
the only criteria for choosing a diamond.
Diamonds should still be compared side by side. Take the time to
look at many stones across the spectrum of quality before purchasing your
diamond.
This allows you, the consumer, to determine the balance of
quality and price that you feel comfortable with.
