The experts at Tagawa Gardens give us tips and timing for gardening success

Early April

  • Cut back late summer-flowering plants like Russian sage, blue mist spirea, and butterfly bush to encourage lush growth. These plants bloom on new growth.

  • Remove all tree wrap around mid to late March to prevent insects and disease.

  • Start seeds indoors: peppers, New Zealand spinach, collards, beets, eggplant

  • Start seeds outdoors: carrots, kohlrabi, peas, radishes, sage, spinach (not New Zealand), turnips

  • Also plant (plants/roots): Chinese cabbage, parsley, spinach, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, potatoes, onion sets, asparagus roots

Mid-April

  • Start seeds indoors: celery, leeks, onions, lima beans, endive, escarole

  • Start seeds outdoors: parsnip, beet, carrot, endive, escarole, lettuce, peas, turnips

  • From plants: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collards, kale

Late April

  • Outdoors: Plant spring bulbs and roots such as ixia, lily of the valley, anemone, lilies, freesia, gladiolus, dahlia, canna, and peonies

  • Plant acclimated perennials

  • When active growth appears on roses, fertilize using rose food per label instructions

  • Prune roses to approximately 1–2 feet above ground or to live wood (do not prune climbers except to shape/remove dead canes)

  • Fertilize all established plants showing new growth with a 5-10-5 or similar fertilizer

  • Fertilize trees and shrubs

  • Apply weed control as weeds begin to grow (follow product instructions)

  • Apply borer control only if evidence is present and not treated in March

  • Spread out mulch mounds around perennials and roses

  • Remove any remaining tree wrap

Early May

  • Plant outdoors: broccoli, peas, beets, Brussels sprouts, carrots, collards, kale, radishes, spinach

  • Plant tomatoes using Wall O’ Water protection

  • Plant sage, pansies, all potted perennials, and summer flowering bulbs

  • Be sure to harden off plants before planting

Mid-May

  • Start seeds outdoors: corn, snap beans, mustard, pumpkin, summer and winter squash

  • Plant outdoors: everything from early May plus lemon balm, New Zealand and Malabar spinach, all herbs, annual flowers, dahlia tubers, gladiola corms, and hardened perennials

Late May

  • Plant outdoors: cucumbers, pumpkins, summer and winter squash, basil, lima beans, peppers, corn, and tomatoes
