Some cool summer tips:
Pavement Temperature: Pavement, asphalt and concrete can absorb and retain heat, making them much hotter than the air temperature. On a 77°F day, pavement can reach temperatures of 125°F.
Burn Risk: At 125°F, skin contact with pavement can cause burns in a matter of minutes. Dogs' paws can be burned on hot surfaces, causing pain, blisters, and long-term damage.
Test the Pavement: Before taking your dog for a walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog to walk on.
Time of Day: Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the pavement is cooler. Avoid midday walks when the sun is at its peak. If you must walk your dog during hotter times, consider using dog booties to protect their paws, and always carry water to keep them hydrated.
Signs of Injury: Watch for limping, licking or chewing at the feet, red or darker-than-usual paw pads, and blisters or wounds. If you notice any of these signs, seek veterinary care immediately.
